Dr. David Areias
David completed Medical School (UKZN) in 2005. Believing in a holistic approach in the management of patients and their families, he has a special interest in physical and mental health related issues.
After managing Wentworth Hospital Casualty Department for a decade, he moved into private practice at an Emergency Centre where he gained experience in Ketamine administration and Conscious Sedation.
Concurrently he was the resident doctor of a rehabilitation centre, where he managed a team committed to the rehabilitation of medical and postoperative patients.
He gained experience in managing terminally ill patients and has an interest in geriatric and palliative care.
During Covid lockdown, a patient called and asked to be seen at home because his family was sick.
“I treated them and it struck me that they were sick, scared and stuck, isolated in their home not being able to leave”. I wondered how many other families were experiencing this.
Emergency medical training, two years working in geriatric and palliative medicine coupled with the personal ability to connect, empathise and be compassionate to a patient’s mental health concerns – that night, treating that family was the catalyst to starting The House Call Doctor Initiative.
